Chapter 13 – The Last Supper
“Laughter, false, a joker’s riddle, false
Kisses and songs and love and no one.”
She was uncomfortable. Coming back to a place that she swore she would never return to was gnawing away at her. The constant sneaking sensation that she was not where she belonged kept giving rise to momentary panic attacks. Although she was with him, and he was treating her to a nice dinner she still felt a degree of absence from him. “Is this hard for him too?” she wondered
“Can I take your drink order?” “I would like a Kendall Jackson Chardonnay please.” She was relieved that the waitress walked up right at that moment. Rescued, that is how she felt. Rescued from her own foreboding. She could not help but think about the warning that was issued to her from the women on the train.
Suddenly she had that feeling, that slug to the stomach with an oversized fist. She swallowed hard when she saw him looking over her shoulder in that sort of, “oh shit” kind of way.
“Well, look who’s here! Gee, I never thought I would see you here again.”
She turned and looked up at the silver haired witch that threatened her and brought so much pain to her heart over a year earlier. Her mind went rushing back to that night. A cold shiver ran up her spine, she could feel her fists clenching tighter, tighter, “breath, breath, it is okay, breath…”
The witch spoke, “I thought that you would have figured out that some things are not worth it. I warned you… Oh, (and with a swing of her silver strands and a pointing of her long finger) I will see you in court.”
The silver haired witch whisked away, not on a broom but, with a mild skip while wearing a pair of lavender crocs.
While a laugh was heard, no a near cackle she could only feel that the joke was really on her. While he was diverting his attention to anything but the moment, she was sinking deeper and deeper. Her existence was quickly becoming an even bigger riddle. The supper that should have been a reunion had been spoiled and the sweet chardonnay quickly turned to bitter gall.
